Guidance for Choosing Solar Reflective Coating

   In Western countries, people make their roof white to resist the sunshine in summer so as to enhance their comfort level. While in China, people start to accept the sunproof thermal barrier coating as a way to achieve this goal since 2009. With the acceptance of such product, more and more coating companies joined this competition. The market started to get compecated due to the various price. Some companies even offered astonishing price to disorder the market.
   People are having following misunderstandings for the sunproof coating, we need to clarify it.
Misunderstanding 1  White color = Sunproof material
    People tend think that the sunproof thermal barrier coating works by means of white color.
    In fact the solar reflectivity of ordinary white coating is between 75%~85%, while for sunproof thermal barrier coating the solar reflectivity is more than 95%. Our ZS-221 sunproof thermal barrier coating can make the solar reflectivity over 98%. For same steel sheet covered by ordinary white coating and ZS-221 sunproof thermal barrier coating, the temperature difference is 5~10℃. It’s obvious that white coating is not sunproof thermal barrier coating.
Misunderstanding 2 High solar reflectivity = high quality sunproof coating
    Solar reflectivity is one factor during design for sunproof thermal barrier coating. Besides that, we have to take many other factors into consideration. Such as film forming ability, weather fastness, dirt pickup resistance, adhesive force, abrasion performance, water resistance etc. We can achieve this goal by selecting the best film former and adding auxiliary. Usually these essential ingredient don’t have high reflectivity, thus we need to find a balance point for perfect performance. After 20 years of researching and updates , our ZS R&D team has come up with the best ratio for each ingredient. In conclusion, do not blindly pursue high solar reflectivity, it may sacrifice the basic feature as a coating. It may lead to a short service life and economic loss.
Misunderstanding 3 oil-based coating is better than water-based coating
     The lustre of oil-based coating is usually higher than water-based one. It works like mirror reflection. While the surface after usage of water-based coating is often matt. It works like diffuse reflection. People tend to think mirror reflection is better than diffuse reflection. In fact, the water-based coating has high lustre cause its resin content is high. The radiativity and reflectivity of resin is lower than solar reflective filler. Thus the reflective effect is not better than water-based coating. What’s worse, the mirror reflection may lead to light pollution. The water-based sunproof coating is matt cause it has high content of solar reflective filler. Meanwhile it won’t cause any light pollution.
Misunderstanding 4 Oil-based coating has better weather fastness and water resistance than water-based coating
    The weather fastness of coating is determined by film former. In fact the weather fastness and water resistance is not directly connected to the base of coating. For example, oil-based epoxy resin coating has a bad weather fastness, while the water-based latex paint has a service life of more than 10 years. Nowadays, most water-based solar reflective coating use pure acrylic emulsion, styrene-acrylate emulsion, silicone-acrylate emulsion.The silicone-acrylate emulsion has best weather fastness and stability. ZS-221 sunproof thermal barrier coating adopts modified silicone-acrylate emulsion as solvent, it won’t pulverize or peel in ourdoors. Some competitors even offer price lower than our raw materials, it’s hard to imagine their service life and solar reflective effect.
    To conclude, when buying solar reflective coating, we should take many factors into consideration, not only price, but also weather fastness,self cleaning properties.
